“Enola Holmes September twenty third”

Yes, Enola Holmes is set to release on 23rd of September only on Netflix. Millie Bobby Brown who stars in a successful series ‘Stranger things’ is going to play the part of Enola Holmes who is Sherlock Holmes younger sister. She’ll be starring alongside with Henry Cavill, Helena Bonham Carter, and Sam Claflin. The trailer on Netflix already gives a little insight about its release date through its caption. Enola Holmes is based on Nancy Springer’s book series of the name Enola Holmes.

According to her stories, Enola Holmes follows the adventures of her elder brothers Sherlock and Mycroft and sometimes of her own too. Enola escapes after finishing her school to search for her missing mother. During her search she meets Marquis of Tewkesbury and soon she becomes a super-sleuth in her own right.

Enola Holmes is basically set in 19th century England and revolves around Sherlock’s younger sister who came to know on her 16th birthday that her mother is missing and has disappeared leaving no clue where she could’ve gone. It is seen that Enola was gifted a very free childhood under the care of her brothers Sherlock and Mycroft. Both the brothers were set on sending her away to finish school from proper Young ladies school.

Refusing to accept her brother’s wishes, Enola escapes from her school in search of her missing mother in London. But this entangles Enola to surround around various mysteries and facts which makes her a Detective of her own. She comes around a young runaway Lord (Louis Partridge), outwitting her own brother Sherlock Holmes and unravels many different conspiracy theories which threatens her to set back the course of history.

It is observed that the team has tried to bring a fresh approach to the detective series by bringing Harry Bradbeer (Killing Eve’s director) as the Director and written by his Dark materials Jack Thorne bringing the poise to the newly framed detective series.

Harry Bradbeer speaks on the film –“There was the fact that there existed a sister that people probably don’t know about. That also brings a whole feminist stance and a feminist angle to the whole Homes story, which seemed pretty interesting to me particularly as Holmes was always thought of to being a little bit of misogynist”.

Henry Cavill who’s playing Sherlock in the film says – “When Harry (Bradbeer) and I were discussing about the characters, we were very much aware that Sherlock had been played wonderfully many times by many wonderful actors and what we liked about this version is that for the very first time, Sherlock seemed to be untraditional due to the nature of story based on her sister (Enola Holmes)”. He added “This is not a Sherlock Holmes story. This is an Enola Holmes movie. And in this case Sherlock seems like just another pea in the pod, if you will, and you will see a lot more warmth, kindness and humanity in Sherlock”.

Though there might be some problems under the way of Netflix’s release of Enola Holmes as the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has imposed copyright infringement charges over using the character of Sherlock Holmes. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who wrote the original Sherlock Holmes lost most of the rights of its character in 2014. Though the estate has filed a 19 page complaint that the film depicts Holmes as having emotions which was specifically a late addition to the character’s nature as per the books.

The estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle quotes that as Sherlock’s possessing emotions was in the late editions which were wrote in the last ten stories of the author between 1923 to 1927, this is a copyright infringement.

As per the court dismissed on 2014, it was adjudged that all works made before 1923 was considered to be in the public domain. Therefore all the characters and their characteristics wrote before 1923 can be shown on the public domain. The estate of the author quotes that these characteristics of Sherlock Holmes were depicted in the stories wrote after 1923 and hence cannot be published on the public domain.

Let’s see where this goes. But for now, the Film “Enola Holmes” is completed with its teaser-trailer released and is set to release on 23rd September.
